Kunzea ambigua (literati).
This tree was originally purchased as collected stock from Hugh Grant of Treemakers at the 2019 AABC convention.
I was drawn to the sharp but simple lines of the tree, a framework I knew could be utilised to build something special. The initial design was done with Hugh at one of his workshops at the convention.
The tree was subsequently redesigned to incorporate the natural behaviour of the foliage.
The earliest images of the original stock I could find, taken from the product catalogue sent out by Hugh Grant.
June 2019. First work done post collection. Design was done alongside Hugh Grant at the 2019 AABC convention.
July 2019. Re-pot into ceramic by Tracey Francis. Further refinement of initial design performed, including a subtle angle change to the left to accentuate movement. Photo taken with me for scale.
Jan 2020. Tree had not been worked on since last photo, and was allowed to grow freely to solidify branching. The pendulous and drooping growth habit inspired the re-design to come.
Jan 2020. New design implemented. The natural growth pattern of the species inspired me to redesign the tree with pendulous, falling foliage. I believe this will also be a more manageable design due to the rapid growth rate of this species.
Feb 2019. Tree as sold, minus the ceramic which I kept. Crown has filled in with more growth. The tree looks more 'wild', but also less elegant and refined. Somewhere between this picture and the previous would be an ideal look.
